After the Fire at Myer in Hobart and the demolition of Myer starting a couple of days after, it was time to see what is left

Looking down Liverpool Street towards Myers

Closer Look at the gap

A linking passage to no where

Former Lift Shaft

The Doors are open

There is one hell of a pile of rumble left

What used to be a linking coridor from the Murray Street part of the store

With the building gone there is a big gap left

A different Angle of the Myer store from Trafalgar Street Carpark

Demolition begins
The equipment used had a claw on the end. Standing by, the fire department snorkel was needed to wet dwon the wall as apparently the dust coming off it as it is demolished was toxic.

Even after almost 24 hours firefighters are still very much on the scene pouring water on hotspots

The facade of the building still stands … just

Blackened and smoke stained it is now in danger of collapse and demolition will start tomorrow

Down liverpool street blocked off for safety reasons and to allow firefighters to do their work

Around the corner in Murrary Street fire engines stand ready for fireups and also mobile control centres for fire and Ambulance

Blocked off, Hobarts Elizabeth Mall is empty

The view from the Argyle street carpark shows the shell of the building with smoke. Firefighters could be seen on the neighbouring rooftops
The Hobart Central Business district was shut down late this afternoon by a fire believed to have started in the Cosmetics counter on the ground floor. It quickly took hold and the Liverpool side of the store was completely gutted,

The flames towered high into the air and were clearly visible from accross the river

Closer the flames were fierce and it could be seen only the shell of the building remained

Streets around the store were closed and police, fire and several ambulances were everywhere

The fire largely blocked by a building with a snorkel unit pouring water into the shell of the building

For a while it looked like it might spread further and the Buddist temple moved some of their valuables out including this Chinese Dragon

After the fire had been brought under control there was never the less a thick plume of smoke
After months of preparing Tony Bullimore sailed out of Hobart in his catamaran Doha in his quest to beat the world record of 70 days for sailing solo non stop around the world.
The start was not without drama with his start being delayed for three hours for the wind and in the meantime the yacht had to be towed close to the finish line by the start boat just to get going.
But then the wind started to pick up and it looked a great sight as it picked up speed down towards the mouth of the derwent with a flotilla of spectator craft.

Before long he had picked up speed and crossed the start line between Piersons Point (where i was) and The Iron Pot (lighthouse at the mouth of the Derwent

Once he had crossed the line Doha quickly left the spectator craft in its wake and I realised as i watched it disappearing into storm bay how small it already looked …

4 CommentsAnzac Day is one of the most important days in the Australian calendar as the country pauses to remember those that have served, fallen and those that were left behind. It can be a sober time, but also a time rich with the chance to catch up with old comrades. Two Up is legal everywhere for the day and there is a blockbuster Essendon vs Collingwood AFL game.
I Went to the Hobart Anzac day parade and here is some of what i saw
